An Aids orphanage in Henan run by an Aids patient has been shut by local government officials after Central China Television (CCTV) raised one million yuan to support the children.

Aids activists and the man who runs the orphanage allege the officials closed the facility to get control of the money.

Workers from the Tuocheng county government went to the farmhouse of Zhu Jinzhong on Sunday and removed about a dozen children, taking them to a new government-run orphanage in a nearby village, Mr Zhu claimed.

Mr Zhu and Aids activists believe the big donation by CCTV was behind the closure of the orphanage. CCTV raised 1 million yuan from its 5,000 staff to support the orphans under Mr Zhu's care after he appeared on television.

His orphanage has also attracted donations from elsewhere within the country and overseas.

By taking the children to a government orphanage, officials can use the donations legitimately, Aids activist Wan Yanhai said.

The money was sent to the Shangqiu city government's Civil Affairs Bureau. It never reached Mr Zhu.

"The closure of Mr Zhu's orphanage obviously has to do with the donation. They built [the government orphanage] hastily when they heard that donations were coming," said [Aids activist, Hu Jia].
